Moscow experiences a continental climate system as a result of its location slap-bang in the plains of European Russia to the east of the Volga. Consequently, the city is pancake flat, with few useful landmarks with which to get one's bearings, save for the Stalinist tower blocks. The Moscow metro is the cheapest & most efficient way of zipping around the city centre.The capital's underground system is a tourist attraction in its own right, replete with mosaics, marble & chandeliers. It is the most frequent metro service in the world & rumour has it that Stalin used more marble in the construction of the first 12 stations than the total used in all the royal palaces. Routes between the 150 stations are clearly marked.
