Sprawling along the shores of the Bay of Naples between the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean and the towering Volcano Versuvius, lies Naples, a chaotic and colourful city, where everyday is like a small adventure and anything seems possible. Although Naples cannot equal Rome and Florence in its sheer riches of historical monuments, it does excel in personality. Love it or hate it, its grittiness, noise and old grandeur makes it nothing short of compelling. The city also attracts those seeking the nearby Costiere Amalfitana, arguably the most beautiful stretch of coastline in Italy. Just several kilometres away are the amazingly preserved ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum some of the worlds most important historical relics. Historically Naples has had an incredible number of rulers, including the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Normans, French, Austrians and Spanish. Residual evidence of all these periods can be found throughout the city and it is this rich heritage of diverse cultural influences, which makes Naples a fascinating city to explore. The centro storico is a labyrinth of narrow streets and piazzas, divided in two by Spaccanapoli, a long narrow cobbled street full of craftsman, cafes and shops. From here you can navigate your way west to the lively Spagnoli Quartiere (Spanish Quarter), via Toledo and via Chiaia for shopping and the impressive piazza Plebiscito. If you venture north through the bohemian cafes and shops of the piazza Bellini and via Tribunali to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, you come to see some of the most important archaeological finds in Europe. If this isn't enough to stimulate the senses, then the food surely will. Home of the pizza, there is no shortage of good restaurants providing their take on the classic Margerita, as well as an abundance of seafood dishes and great desserts. Naples mild climate means the city can be visited all year round, and its blue skies undoubtedly helps to smooth over its rough edges. It's not a destination to head to for peace and tranquillity but it will leave you feeling invigorated and wanting more.
